Energy-Efficiency Technology Gets Better With Time

PNNL's updated FEDS software makes it easier than ever to improve building efficiency

In our digital world, we see software applications come and go. Most don't stick around for 20+ years, but energy-efficiency promoting technology created at PNNL is standing the test of time.

First developed in the early 1990s, the Facility Energy Decision System, or FEDS software, simulates building energy use and identifies cost-effective measures for improving energy efficiency, such as upgrading lighting or HVAC systems, adding insulation, replacing windows or switching fuel types. Following a succession of upgrades and enhancements, PNNL recently released version 7.0.

What’s New?

One of the biggest improvements is the addition of building technologies that FEDS is able to evaluate. Several HVAC technologies have been added, along with next-generation lighting technologies, like LEDs, which are already beginning to transform the market. FEDS is able to quickly assess where the application of such technologies makes sense, based on factors including building location, operation, and energy prices.

Additionally, FEDS 7.0 features a more flexible and accurate building energy simulation engine, updated project cost and performance data, and enhanced reporting features.

And because data input requirements remain small and adaptable compared with other energy analysis tools, "A reasonable building model can be developed and evaluated in a matter of minutes or hours compared to days and weeks for other tools," said PNNL scientist and FEDS developer Bob Dahowski. “Built-in technology performance and cost models support automated project identification and cost-benefit evaluation based on the conditions specific to your buildings.”

FEDS is used throughout the U.S. and in many locations worldwide by and for a broad mix of organizations, including federal, state, and municipal government agencies, universities, utilities, energy service providers, and Fortune 100 industrial, manufacturing, and entertainment companies. Additionally, PNNL utilizes FEDS extensively in support of building and campus energy sustainability goals for partners as well as its own facilities.
